The New Dye NT

How’s this for news? Dye surprised the media last week by announcing and promo’ing their new paintball gun for 2010, the Dye NT.

Ok, let’s clarify a few things before I continue. Dye has been gaining corporate fame for the last 6 years through their Matrix gun line (i.e. DM4, DM5, DM6…etc). It began with the Matrix LED, which quickly evolved into the 2003 Matrix LCD (guess what year that was in?). The following year, the DM4 was released by Dye. This gun had a HUGE impact on the high-end gun market, as it introduced many new mechanical and electronic advances in the sport. As you can probably tell, Dye stuck with their Matrix line for a long time… until today.

Apparently, Dye is “hanging up” the Matrix line – or, at least the name. Dye has once again made the NT their smallest, lightest marker to date.

“A three year culmination of engineering and design, creating the most advanced paintball gun ever made. The Dye NT takes accuracy, air efficiency, design and style to a new standard by setting a benchmark for all others to follow. The Dye NT is the Choice of Champions.” -Dye

I think it’s a good move by Dye. While it has nothing to say about the gun’s performance, I was simply getting tired of hearing about Dye Matrices. As a paintballer, you would never hear: “What kind of Dye gun do you have?” It was always: “What year Matrix do you have?” Thanks for keeping it fresh, Dye.

Oh, and you wanted a price right? Rumor has it, $1500-$1600 MSRP. What did you expect…?

Reballs – Video Review

Up next on our video review list is a unique money saver for most paintball gun owners. One of the biggest constraints for paintballers today is money for buying paintballs. You buy paint not only to play, but for every other reason you want to shoot your gun at home or at the field. Buying your gear is one thing, because it’s a one-time cost. But once you shoot your paint, it’s long gone. Reball eliminated this problem by creating a synthetic reusable paintball. This is probably a smarter move for players who shoot a lot of paint at home, for teching and practice. Since they’re reusable, they come in a box of 500 for $134.99, or a you can buy a tube of 140 for $49.99. Sara does a better job explaining it.

The Sentry Project

Here’s your worst enemy … or friend: a Paintball gun mounted on an Autonomous Turret Sentry. Its purpose… well, after watching the video above I hope you can see the capabilities of this… masterpiece. The Sentry Project was started in a garage by an avid backyard paintballer. After over a year of tedious revisions, it has developed through 9 prototypes and is the most evolved Autonomous Sentry on the web. The paintball sentry uses software that is specifically written for a custom servo controller, a device that sends commands to servos to aim and fire the paintball gun. The software was written by the designer to enable the turret to rapidly track, anticipate and engage multiple targets – and is very customizable.

If you’ve already had your eye on this project, you should know that recently more videos were released by its creator. They’re all worth a watch, the creator updates his website and youtube page with videos all the time. It’s very cool to see such an advanced paintball project unfold.

Cost
The designer claims that you can build one of these paintball sentrys for under $500. He sells software kits directly through his eBay store. The software kit is the most inexpensive solution for owning your own Automated Sentry. It is ideal for those of you who are mechanically inclined or have custom applications in mind. He plans to sell completed turrets in the future after he simplifies its construction.

I had the pleasure to ask the designer and founder of The Sentry Project, David, some questions about his work:
